The State University of New York system includes a number of impressively ranked universities, and the state itself is full of private colleges. With 307 colleges and universities, New York ranks second when it comes to higher education. Below are the most popular colleges in the state, along with their tuition prices.
New York might be best known for its incredible New York City, but it’s also the home of excellent education. From a military service academy to the oldest Catholic college in the East, New York has a diverse group of colleges and universities to choose from.
10. St. John’s University
Type of College: Private University
Enrollment: 20,346
Cost: $37,150
Best Program: Business is by far the most popular major at St. John’s, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the student body. The program offers BS degrees in ten different areas of business, as well as nine combined degree options. Students who enter the combined degree track can earn both their BS and MBA in five years.
Fun Fact: Ninety-seven percent of students receive financial aid each year thanks to St. John’s scholarships and grants.
9. Syracuse University
Type of College: Private University
Enrollment: 20,829
Cost: $36,300
Best Program: Journalism is one of the top programs at Syracuse. With concentrations in newspaper and online, magazine, and broadcast journalism, students have a lot to choose from. The program is very competitive for first year students, and typically accepts students with a 3.9 GPA.
Fun Fact: Syracuse University’s sports teams play and practice inside the Carrier Dome, the biggest college sports stadium in the country.
8. Cornell University
Type of College: Private University

Cost: $43,185
Best Program: As an Ivy League School, Cornell has many renowned programs. But engineering physics stands out as the best. Ranked number one in the U.S., the major offers students the flexibility to choose a curriculum that is either research or theoretical focused. Thanks to this breadth, graduates find jobs in the industry quickly.
Fun Fact: Cornell is technically both a public and private university – it partners with the State University of New York and receives federal grants thanks to its status as a land-grant university.
7. Nassau Community College
Type of College: Community College
Enrollment: 23,226
Cost: $1,995 for residents, $3,990 for out-of-state students
Best Program: Liberal arts is the biggest and best department offered. From Africana studies and theatre to geography and library studies, the program encompasses over half the courses of study on campus. An AA in liberal arts gives students everything they need to transfer into a state university.
Fun Fact: Nassau faculty members have won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching more than any other New York community college.
6. Stony Brook University
Type of College: Public University
Enrollment: 24,149
Cost: $5,570 for residents, $16,190 for out-of-state students
Best Program: The most popular major among Stony Brook students is psychology. Majors can choose to pursue either a BS or BA. BS psychology students gain more knowledge in the fields of math and science, while BA students take a more interdisciplinary path.
Fun Fact: Stony Brook is one of four universities that manage the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
5. Suffolk County Community College

Enrollment: 26,787
Cost: $3,990 for residents, $7,980 for out-of-state students
Best Program: SCCC’s transfer program makes up over half the school’s academic curriculum. With classes in business, performing arts, and engineering, it prepares students for four-year colleges. By taking a combination of general education classes, students can earn an AA or AS that grants them entrance into a state university.
Fun Fact: The campus is home to the Suffolk Center on Holocaust, Diversity, and Human Understanding, a small museum full of artifacts that document the Holocaust and American slavery.

Type of College: Private University
Enrollment: 28,221
Cost: $43,088
Best Program: The art history department at Columbia is one of the best undergraduate art programs in the U.S. Students explore architecture, archaeology, and the history of art through a variety of spectrums. Majors also have the opportunity to take limited-enrollment seminars that provide in-depth study in one era of art history.
Fun Fact: Columbia was the site of the country’s first mining school in 1864. Today, the mining school is known as the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.
3. University at Buffalo

Enrollment: 28,860
Cost: $5,570 for residents, $16,190 for out-of-state students
Best Program: The business administration major is one of the most popular. Over the course of the program, students gain knowledge about business management, organizational behavior, and basic accounting. Interdisciplinary studies are also a focus of the department: students are expected to take half their classes in other departments.
Fun Fact: Buffalo’s Center for Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities is designed for students who want to spend their college years immersed in lab work or other research projects.

Best Program: Health science is the most popular program among Excelsior College students. Majors can select an emphasis from seven BS options, or nine combined BS/MBA paths. The program combines other areas of study like education, business, or social work.
Fun Fact: 30 percent of Excelsior students are active members of the U.S. military.

Best Program: Business tops the list of most popular majors at NYU. As part of the Leonard Stern School of Business, the undergraduate program encourages students to examine how business relates to society, politics, culture, and art. During their junior year, majors take a year of global business seminars.
Fun Fact: For more than 20 years, NYU has hosted the annual Strawberry Festival, a street fair dedicated to all things strawberry.
