Historically Black Virginia State University has entered into an agreement with the public school system in the city of Martinsville as well as with the public schools in Henry County. Under the agreement, the university will offer college-level courses to juniors and seniors in high schools in these districts. Courses will be taught at the local high school but will be identical to those taught on the VSU campus. Students who successfully complete the courses will receive high school and college credit. There is no cost to the students for taking these courses.
Students who earn college credits during high school can complete a four-year college degree in less time. This makes college more affordable for low-income students.
Virginia State previously entered into similar agreements with nine other public school systems in Virginia.
