Kenneth Frazier: The First African American to serve as CEO of a pharmaceutical company

It’s official: lawyers rule the world.
As if we needed more proof, Merck has announced that attorney Kenneth Frazier, 55, will take over as its chief executive starting January 1.
Frazier joined Merck in 1992, serving for several years as general counsel and overseeing the defense of Merck’s Vioxx product-liability litigation that was largely resolved by a $4.85 billion settlement in 2007.
He later became head of the company’s biggest unit, human health, in 2007 and served in that role until being elevated to company president earlier this year.
Frazier now joins Jeff Kindler in the lawyer/pharma hall of fame. Kindler went from general counsel to CEO at Pfizer in 2006.
