Is this true?
(some answers from the web)
It's cultural - Black men tend to believe they can never achieve any success because they will be held down by The Man, that they stand a good chance of dying at a young age, and get a lot of peer pressure if they start to use their intelligence. Black women don't have these influences as much. -Oldwhiteguy
As far as I am concerned, there are just as much black men, going to my school, as black women. We do tend to care more about our grades and doing well in school though. I do notice the black men I am around, are stepping up more, they are finally maturing. -TheBlackChick
I think many black men rely on their talents and street smarts than say, going to college and doing it the right/white way! Example: music, dancing, sports, cooking(my father), etc.... -UR HYNESS
Black men more care about sport, joining a gang etc - Anti Cyrus
For Black men, they don't have that large push yet. Theres nothing driving Black men to better themselves, for Black women I honestly think it was the fact that many were single moms and wanted a better life for their kids. - Badd Becca
This trend is showing up in all races not just in blacks. The college ratio is 51% female and it ratio is rising. THe graduate school difference is even bigger. I think there are probably a couple of social causes for this. Males might feel a need to be the provider and make money right away instead of going to school. Also I think the notion that "boys will be boys" allows a much more lenient attitude from parents which might cause them to be less responsible in the future. I have read a few years ago that boys are having more trouble in school with focusing. They blamed it on video games and electronics. -curlyPT
